Who Is Tubbo?

Tubbo (real name Tobias James Smith, born December 23, 2003) is a British streamer and YouTuber whose content focuses on Minecraft. He became a key character on the invite-only Dream SMP server in 2020, collaborating with creators such as TommyInnit and server owner Dream, and has grown into one of the most-followed Minecraft streamers in the world — 5.24 million Twitch followers as of September 2026, enough to place him among the 50 most-followed channels on the platform.

Smith was born in Chichester, West Sussex, grew up in the seaside town of Bognor Regis, and later moved to Brighton. He has played Minecraft since its beta era — he first discovered the game on a friend’s family computer — and before committing to Minecraft content he spent time playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, until the interactive potential of multiplayer Minecraft servers pulled him in a different direction.

Early Career: Beta Minecraft to First Stream (2018–2020)

Tubbo created both his Twitch and YouTube channels in May 2018 (his YouTube channel joined on May 14, 2018, and his Twitch account a day later). Early uploads were almost entirely Minecraft. He has said he chose Twitch over other platforms because it looked like it had “more to figure out” — a challenge rather than a shortcut — in an interview with TheGamer. For roughly two years he built a modest, dedicated audience before the break that changed everything arrived in 2020.

Dream SMP and Rise to Fame (2020–present)

In 2020 Smith joined the Dream SMP, an invitation-only Minecraft survival multiplayer server, and quickly became one of its key characters alongside TommyInnit and Dream. The server’s scripted storylines and roleplay turned him into one of the fastest-growing streamers on Twitch: media outlet Unikrn ranked him the fourth fastest-growing streamer of 2021 after he gained more than 1.5 million followers in a single year, and Vulture reported he was among the top streamers for Five Nights at Freddy’s that year, generating roughly 273,000 hours of collective viewership. The October 2021 Twitch leak — which disclosed top streamers’ payouts from August 2019 to October 2021 — reportedly placed him 81st with a figure of about US$1,000,504 for that period.

His signature format is the Tubbathon, a subathon where the stream keeps running until a donation- and subscription-fed timer expires. Tubbathon 2 ran for 27 days in March 2023. Tubbathon 3, which began on March 1, 2024, expanded the concept with cooking shows, Dungeons & Dragons sessions and panel games, and ended after 64 days — more than double the previous record. In late 2024 he launched The Realm SMP, a fantasy-themed Minecraft server featuring around 30 streamers roleplaying as wizards and other characters.

Misfits Gaming and TubNet

In February 2022, Tubbo joined Misfits Gaming, an American esports organisation, as a Minecraft content creator — a partnership announced alongside his biggest business venture: TubNet, a Minecraft server offering competitive mini-games and cosmetics, which launched on November 25, 2022 with Misfits Gaming as one of its investors. He announced his departure from Misfits on December 26, 2023, effective from 2024, and TubNet was placed on hiatus from January 12, 2024.

Music, Chess and Charity

Outside Minecraft, Tubbo released the song “Life by the Sea” with CG5 in August 2021, which charted at number 84 on the UK Official Singles Chart. In February 2021 he reached the semifinals of the consolation bracket at PogChamps 3, Chess.com’s creator chess tournament, before losing to fellow streamer Neekolul. He is also a consistent charity fundraiser: in September 2021 he joined Technoblade’s Minecraft hunting charity stream, which raised more than US$324,000 for the Sarcoma Foundation of America; in June 2022 he played MC Championship’s MCC Pride, which raised over US$145,000 for the Trevor Project; and in December 2024 he took part in Yogscast’s Jingle Jam alongside a thousand other creators.

Awards and Recognition

Tubbo has been nominated for Best Minecraft Streamer at the Streamer Awards four times — for the 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025 editions — a remarkable run of longevity in a category packed with stars. He sits at the centre of a generation of British Minecraft creators that includes Philza, the hardcore-survival legend, and frequent collaborator TommyInnit, and his 5.24 million Twitch followers make him one of the United Kingdom’s biggest streamers of any game.
