You queue with your Bangladesh or South-East Asia squad in PUBG Mobile, then open YouTube and find creators calling what looks like the same game BGMI. The island looks familiar. The drop, looting and blue-zone pressure make sense. So why does the name change?
The short answer: BGMI is the India-available version of PUBG Mobile, not a completely different battle royale. The BGMI vs PUBG Mobile difference is mainly about regional availability, publishing, accounts, esports and update tracks. For Bangladesh players, the release you play is global PUBG Mobile. Here is what that distinction means before you download anything or follow an update guide.
Same engine, different story
PUBG Mobile is a free-to-play mobile adaptation of PUBG: Battlegrounds, co-developed by LightSpeed Studios and PUBG Corporation. It launched on Android and iOS on 19 March 2018. Publishing varies by region, with Krafton, Tencent and VNG Corporation among its publishers.
According to the PUBG Mobile release history, it had accumulated around 1.75 billion downloads by January 2026. That cumulative figure is different from the download bracket displayed on its Google Play listing.
BGMI’s story starts with India’s ban. On 2 September 2020, India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology banned PUBG Mobile along with 117 Chinese apps under Section 69A of the IT Act, 2000.
Krafton’s India-available version, previously announced as PUBG Mobile India, became Battlegrounds Mobile India. The BGMI release timeline records its announcement on 6 May 2021, followed by pre-registration on 18 May. Android early access began on 17 June, with the full Android release on 2 July and iOS release on 18 August 2021.
One more name to keep straight: in 2021 PUBG Mobile also spawned a separate game set in the PUBG universe, New State Mobile. That one is its own title, not BGMI. BGMI is the India-available version of PUBG Mobile itself, which is why the gunplay feels identical between the two.

The differences that actually matter to you
Availability: India listing versus global release
BGMI is available in India. Players in Bangladesh play the global PUBG Mobile release. If your squad is discussing PUBG Mobile while an Indian creator says BGMI, that regional split explains the different names without making either person’s terminology wrong.
BGMI also has its own availability history. It was removed from Google Play and the App Store on 28 July 2022 following a government order over data privacy. Krafton announced its relaunch on 19 May 2023, and it became downloadable and playable again during 27–29 May 2023. That is BGMI’s timeline, not a global PUBG Mobile shutdown. Before the removal, BGMI had already passed 270 million Google Play downloads as of July 2022, which is why its Indian scene stayed so loud.
Separate apps and accounts
These are separate apps with separate accounts. Do not read “India version” as a promise that your global account, inventory or progress automatically appears when you install BGMI. Treat each account as its own grind rather than assuming the different name is just a menu setting.
Krafton did offer a PUBG Mobile-to-BGMI account and game-data transfer window, but it closed in December 2021. That was a historical migration option, not an ongoing account bridge.
What about playing together? Our sources do not provide an official cross-play statement. The documented official link was that transfer window. Shared gameplay alone is not enough to establish shared matchmaking, so do not use similar-looking footage as confirmation that the apps can squad up together.
Esports: different starting points, global connections
Krafton India Esports runs BGMI’s official tournaments, Battlegrounds Mobile India Series, or BGIS, and BGMI Pro Series, or BMPS. PUBG Mobile has regional PUBG Mobile Club Open, or PMCO, circuits among its leagues.
Those scenes are connected at the international level. The BMPS 2026 champion automatically qualifies for the PUBG Mobile Esports World Cup, and top teams from BMIC 2025 took slots in PMGC 2025. Indian BGMI teams can therefore feed into global PUBG Mobile events. That tournament pathway does not, by itself, answer questions about everyday cross-play.
Updates: check the right game’s guide
Both games historically receive their own update tracks. A video showing a BGMI update should not be your only evidence for what is available in global PUBG Mobile. Check which app a guide covers before treating its details as instructions for your install.
Use our BGMI update guide for BGMI, or our PUBG Mobile update guide for the global release. Similar branding is not a reason to mix up download instructions or assume matching patch contents.
If you play from Bangladesh
Your game is global PUBG Mobile. You do not need to switch to BGMI just because an Indian creator uses that name. BGMI videos can still help with strategy because the core battle royale is the same: up to 100 players, solo, duo or squads of up to four, a parachute drop, a shrinking blue zone and roughly 30-minute rounds.
Read those videos for decisions: where to drop, when to rotate and how to support your squad. Then separate that tactical advice from anything involving accounts, downloads or updates. Familiar gameplay does not make every app-specific instruction interchangeable.
If you want to play on a computer, see our guide to playing PUBG Mobile on PC with GameLoop. If you are topping up UC for your Bangladesh PUBG Mobile account, keep it on the global PUBG Mobile side, rather than confusing it with BGMI.
Which one should you play?
India: BGMI. Bangladesh and South-East Asia: global PUBG Mobile. That is the practical recommendation. Choose the release for your region and keep your squad’s app, your account and the guides you follow aligned.
Neither name alone tells you which player has better aim or smarter rotations. Both share the same core skill set: looting efficiently, reading the zone, choosing fights and working with teammates. Watch useful players from either community, but keep account and update advice specific to your game. Learn across the divide; do not mistake it for a shared account system.
Frequently asked questions
BGMI vs PUBG: which is better for Bangladesh players?
For Bangladesh players, global PUBG Mobile is the practical choice. BGMI is the India-available version, not a documented gameplay upgrade over the global release. Both share the core battle royale format and skill set. Choose by region and keep your squad, account and update guides aligned, rather than judging quality from the name used in a creator’s video.
Can BGMI and PUBG Mobile play together?
Our sources do not provide an official statement confirming cross-play between them. BGMI and PUBG Mobile are separate apps with separate accounts. The only documented official account link was Krafton’s account and game-data transfer window, which closed in December 2021. That historical transfer option should not be treated as evidence of shared matchmaking or an ongoing connection between accounts.
Are BGMI and PUBG Mobile the same game?
They share the same core battle royale gameplay, and BGMI is a version of PUBG Mobile available in India. Both involve parachuting in, looting, fighting and surviving a shrinking blue zone. However, they are not the same app: they have separate accounts, their own update tracks and different regional esports starting points. Similar gameplay does not make their account systems interchangeable.
What is the main difference between BGMI and PUBG Mobile?
The main difference is regional availability and the surrounding game ecosystem. Krafton’s BGMI is available in India, while Bangladesh players use global PUBG Mobile. Publishing arrangements, accounts, update tracks and esports circuits differ. The core royale remains the same, so strategy can carry across even when account instructions or update details need to stay specific to the app you play.
