Free Fire vs PUBG Mobile: Which Is Better for Your Squad?

Every Bangladesh and Southeast Asian squad has had this argument in voice chat: Free Fire is better. No, PUBG Mobile is better. Then somebody blames your phone, your aim or your entire friend list.

Here is the honest answer: pick for your phone, your available time and the fights your squad enjoys. Both games are legitimately huge. Neither needs fanboy noise to justify playing it. Let us settle the useful parts of the argument.

Same genre, two very different games

Free Fire is Garena’s free-to-play battle royale for Android and iOS. It launched on 8 December 2017, became the most downloaded mobile game globally in 2019 and built a particularly strong following in Southeast Asia. By 2021 it had over 150 million daily active users and more than $1 billion in lifetime revenue, and as of February 2024 it still counted around 100 million active users. That history is covered in the Free Fire overview.

PUBG Mobile arrived on 19 March 2018. Co-developed by LightSpeed Studios and PUBG Corporation, it adapts PUBG: Battlegrounds for mobile. Publishers vary by region, including Krafton, Tencent and VNG Corporation. The PUBG Mobile overview records around 1.75 billion accumulated downloads and over $15 billion grossed by January 2026.

So which came first? Free Fire, by a few months. Earlier does not automatically mean better, and a shared battle royale label does not mean these games ask the same things of you.

Free Fire vs PUBG Mobile: quick comparison table

The download badges establish scale, not a winner. Likewise, an esports viewing record tells you about an event’s audience, not which game will feel better on your handset tonight.

The differences that actually matter

Pace, lobby size and your available time

Free Fire puts up to 52 players into its battle royale matches, with solo, duo and squad options. Its more compact-feeling approach suits players who want a direct route into the argument: who wins the fight?

Clash Squad makes that preference clearer. It is 4v4, best-of-7, with a buy phase. If your group prefers repeated team engagements to committing to a full royale, this is a concrete reason to choose Free Fire, not just a loyalty badge.

PUBG Mobile supports up to 100 players, with solo, duo and squads of up to four. A full round averages about 30 minutes. The parachute drop and shrinking zone suit a longer survival arc. Allow time for the whole round, rather than assuming you can leave halfway through without annoying your teammates.

Characters, pets and the fight itself

Free Fire has 50+ characters with active or passive skills, an equippable set of four skills, and pets. Gloo Wall grenades provide deployable cover. That gives you more to discuss than aim: your skill choices and cover decisions belong in the plan too.

Think of the preference as ability-led fights versus a more military-style royale focus. Choose Free Fire if those extra tools sound fun. Lean towards PUBG Mobile if your ideal squad conversation centres on positioning, the next zone and taking a sensible engagement.

Do not confuse different tools with no skill. Neither preference proves that the other game’s players cannot aim. It simply tells you what kind of decisions you enjoy making under pressure.

Your phone matters more than screenshots

On a weaker phone, Free Fire would be my starting recommendation, not a guaranteed performance winner. Its Southeast Asian reach is not a benchmark, and this guide does not claim handset testing. Try it on your actual device before committing to a ranked grind.

Garena launched Free Fire Max in September 2021 with improved graphics, lighting and sound. Free Fire and Max players can play together, so the enhanced version does not require splitting your squad.

PUBG Mobile uses Unreal Engine 4 optimised for mobile. Its lower-end Android alternative, PUBG Mobile Lite, first released in Thailand on 24 January 2019. That is release history, not a promise about current local availability or compatibility with your phone.

The paid side

Free Fire separates gold earned in-game from Diamonds bought with real money. If currency is part of your decision, read our free diamonds guide without treating it as a reason to spend.

If your PUBG Mobile conversation has become a UC grind discussion, pause and return to the actual comparison: do you enjoy the matches? Keep spending separate from your verdict. A currency wishlist is not evidence that either game suits your phone or squad better.

If you play from Bangladesh

Compare the global games discussed here, rather than assuming every Indian video describes the same version. Both global Google Play listings show 1B+ downloads today; the Free Fire Google Play listing is one of those listings. Free Fire is particularly popular in Southeast Asia, but that does not settle your own squad’s preference.

India banned Free Fire in February 2022, while Free Fire Max remained available there. PUBG Mobile was banned in India on 2 September 2020, eventually leading to BGMI in 2021. Those changes explain why Indian YouTube discussions can look different. Read our BGMI vs PUBG Mobile explainer before mixing the versions up.

Settings deserve attention in either game. Adjust for your own controls and comfort instead of copying a creator blindly. Our Free Fire sensitivity guide is a starting point, not a substitute for practice.

So which one should you play?

Start with Free Fire for a weaker phone, shorter-session preferences or a squad that wants 4v4 fights. Check how it actually runs, and remember that Clash Squad is the clearer recommendation for focused team engagements.

Pick PUBG Mobile for big-lobby tactical royale and longer rounds. If planning a drop and surviving the closing zone is the evening’s main event, its format fits that mood.

Aim discipline, communication and positioning are useful habits to carry between them. Keeping both installed is a reasonable option if your phone allows it. The winner is the game your squad can run comfortably, finish without rushing and genuinely wants to queue again.

Frequently asked questions

Which came first, Free Fire or PUBG Mobile?

Free Fire came first, launching on 8 December 2017. PUBG Mobile followed on 19 March 2018, so Free Fire arrived a few months earlier. That answers the launch-date argument, but it does not establish quality. PUBG Mobile is the mobile adaptation of PUBG: Battlegrounds, rather than the start of that broader game’s history.

Which game has more downloads?

Both global Google Play listings currently show 1B+ downloads, so those badges alone cannot tell you which has more. PUBG Mobile had around 1.75 billion accumulated downloads and over $15 billion grossed by January 2026. Free Fire was the most downloaded mobile game globally in 2019. Those are different measurements, not a clean head-to-head total.

Are Free Fire and PUBG Mobile from the same company?

No. Free Fire is developed and published by Garena. PUBG Mobile was co-developed by LightSpeed Studios and PUBG Corporation, with publishers varying by region, including Krafton, Tencent and VNG Corporation. They share the battle royale genre, but they do not share the same developer and publisher setup.

Which has better graphics?

There is no universal answer without naming your phone, settings and visual preference. PUBG Mobile uses Unreal Engine 4 optimised for mobile. Free Fire Max offers improved graphics, lighting and sound compared with Free Fire. For your own choice, compare the versions your device runs comfortably rather than judging only by promotional screenshots.
