Opera GX Review 2026: Useful Gaming Tools or Just a Skin?

Verdict first: Opera GX is worth considering if you keep streams, chats and browser tabs open while gaming. Its resource controls and sidebar tools give it a purpose beyond the gaming look. But it is still a closed-source, Chromium-based browser, not a shortcut to higher FPS. Choose it for control and convenience, not promises of faster games.

The fresh reason to revisit it in this Opera GX review is Linux support. Opera GX arrived on Linux on 19 March 2026, bringing another option to players outside Windows and macOS. This is a feature-based assessment, not a benchmark test: there are no measured FPS gains or RAM-saving claims here.

What is Opera GX underneath the gaming design?

Opera GX is Opera’s free gaming browser, built on Chromium. As documented in Opera’s browser history and feature overview, Windows early access opened in June 2019, with macOS following that December. The gaming identity is not a new direction added for 2026.

Calling it a gaming skin over Chromium is partly fair. Themes, dynamic backgrounds and RGB sync effects are central to its appeal. However, that description misses the resource limiters, tab management and gaming sidebar tools. Those are the features to judge before deciding whether you like the look.

Chromium-based does not mean fully open-source. Opera GX remains closed-source. If being able to inspect the browser’s complete source code matters to you, that is a real drawback rather than a small detail.

GX Control: the strongest reason to try it

GX Control lets you cap the browser’s CPU, RAM and network usage. The idea is straightforward: stop your browser from taking resources you want available for games. The Verge’s original Opera GX launch coverage highlighted CPU and RAM limits as a defining feature.

This makes the most sense for multitaskers. You might want a guide open, a chat nearby and a stream running between matches. Instead of treating all that browser activity as untouchable, GX gives you controls over its resource budget. Hot Tabs Killer also targets resource-hogging tabs.

The important distinction is between limiting browser usage and making a game faster. They are not the same claim. GX Control is useful because it gives you a way to manage competing demands. It does not establish that your particular game will gain FPS.

  • CPU limiter: sets a cap on browser CPU usage.
  • RAM limiter: lets you put a ceiling on browser memory usage.
  • Network limiter: caps the browser’s network usage.
  • Hot Tabs Killer: helps deal with tabs consuming too many resources.

For a low-spec PC, these are relevant tools, but closing unnecessary tabs should still be your first move. Do not install GX expecting its controls to replace better hardware or remove every source of slowdown.

Sidebar tools, GX Corner and everyday convenience

The Opera GX gaming browser includes sidebar integrations such as Twitch, Discord, Twitter and Instagram. Pop-out chat panels put communication close to the page you are using. For stream viewers and players who regularly check several services, this layout is a stronger selling point than the gamer branding.

GX Corner combines gaming releases, deals and news articles in one built-in page. It suits someone who wants a regular place to check what is coming out. If you already follow your own sources and storefronts, it may feel less essential.

There is also a built-in ad blocker and GX Cleaner, which clears cache, cookies and other unwanted files. These are practical extras, but clearing browser files should not be confused with a proven gaming-performance boost. Cookie cleanup can also be something you want to handle selectively.

Customization is extensive in the areas gamers are likely to notice. Mods can change the look through themes and dynamic backgrounds, while RGB sync effects support the setup-focused design. If you prefer a plain browser, much of this appeal will be lost on you.

Linux support is the big 2026 update

According to Opera’s Linux launch announcement, Opera GX released for Linux on 19 March 2026. It ships as .deb and .rpm packages, with official support for Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora and openSUSE-based distributions.

Phoronix’s Linux release coverage also notes that the browser remains closed-source. Linux availability therefore broadens where you can use GX without changing that transparency trade-off. Check whether your distribution falls within the stated support before treating installation as a settled question.

Is Opera GX good for Bangladesh and South Asia?

For someone using a low-spec laptop for both study and games, resource controls are more relevant than RGB styling. Start with fewer tabs, then consider GX if you still want browser content open during play. The network limiter is a usage control, not a promise of lower data bills.

At a gaming café, check whether browser installation is allowed before planning around GX. On a budget phone, judge your needs separately: GX Mobile exists for Android and iOS, but that does not establish desktop-feature parity. If your next upgrade is mobile hardware, our budget gaming phone guide for Bangladesh is more relevant than desktop browser styling.

Should you switch from Chrome?

Switch if GX’s specific tools solve something you regularly manage: resource-heavy tabs, scattered chats or a browser full of gaming bookmarks. Stay with your current browser if you do not need those tools. Sharing a Chromium foundation does not settle which interface suits you better.

Use our Opera GX vs Chrome head-to-head for the direct comparison. If you are considering more options, the best gaming browser 2026 roundup is the broader starting point.

Opera GX pros and cons

ProsCons and limits
CPU, RAM and network controlsNo guaranteed FPS improvement
Chat and streaming integrationsLess compelling if you do not use those services
GX Corner groups gaming contentMay duplicate sources you already follow
Mods, themes and RGB sync effectsGaming styling will not suit everyone
Free, with Linux support added in 2026Remains closed-source

Final verdict

Opera GX is a sensible option for gaming multitaskers, not a performance upgrade by itself. Low-spec PC users should consider its resource controls; stream viewers may value its integrations. Linux support makes it relevant to more setups in 2026. Try it for those practical reasons, but skip it if you want open-source software or simply do not need the gaming extras.

Frequently asked questions

Is Opera GX safe and free to use?

Opera GX is free, but that alone does not answer every safety or privacy question. It remains closed-source, which matters if source transparency is a priority for you. This review does not include an independent security audit or certify that the browser is risk-free.

Does Opera GX really boost FPS?

GX Control lets you cap browser CPU, RAM and network usage so you can manage resources alongside a game. That is not a guaranteed FPS boost. We have no benchmark results here showing higher frame rates.

Is Opera GX better than Chrome for gaming?

Opera GX is worth considering if you want browser resource limiters, gaming content and sidebar integrations. Both browsers are Chromium-based, but that does not prove one is faster for your setup. Choose GX for features you will actually use, not an assumed gaming advantage.

Does Opera GX work well on low-end PCs?

Its CPU and RAM limiters make Opera GX worth considering for a low-end PC used for gaming and browsing together. Hot Tabs Killer also helps address resource-hogging tabs. These tools do not replace hardware upgrades or guarantee smooth performance on every machine.
